Next year, in 2018, Disney Legend Burny MATTINSON will achieve the record number of years employed at The Walt Disney Company - 65 in total. All of them were spent at the Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Burny has been a part of most of the classic Disney films, from Lady and the Tramp and Sleeping Beauty, to Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Winnie the Pooh, and Big Hero 6. Join Disney Animator Eric GOLDBERG as he interviews Burny about his Disney careers as mail room boy, assistant animator, animator, designer, director, producer, and storyboard artist extraordinaire. Burny’s influence on these iconic films cannot be underestimated!
Part 2 : Once Upon a Time at Disney - Creating Characters
Disney Animator Eric GOLDBERG and Disney Legend Burny MATTINSON take the audience on a journey about the techniques involved in creating memorable characters for Disney Shorts and Features. Learn about what it takes to make each character in a film have a distinctive personality, how characters’ roles in the story are defined, what types of movements define certain characters, and how characters’ attitudes and expressions can be strong, even without the aid of dialogue. Burny MATTINSON will give us his unique perspective about how the story process is a vital part of character creation.
Burny MATTINSON is a director and story artist who has been a key creative player at Walt Disney Animation Studios since 1953. He contributed to Lady and the Tramp(1955), Robin Hood(1973), and produced/directed the Oscar nominated featurette, Mickey's Christmas Carol(1983), and the full-length feature, The Great Mouse Detective(1986). MATTINSON continued to work as a story artist on such features as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tarzan, Winnie the Pooh, and Big Hero 6. He was named a Disney Legend in 2008, and recently celebrated 64 years of service with Disney Animation. He is currently working on several new animated short projects.
Eric GOLDBERG, supervising animator and director at Walt Disney Animation Studios, has brought to life Aladdin's Genie, Hercules's Phil, The Princess and the Frog's Louis, and the tattoo “Mini Maui” in Moana. He directed the Academy Award winning Pocahontas(1995) and directed two segments, Rhapsody in Blue and The Carnival of the Animals, Finale in Fantasia/2000(2000). He was a head of hand-drawn animation for Mickey Mouse in the Annie Award winning and Oscar Nominated Get a Horse! which screened in theaters with Frozen(2013). Most recently, he was the supervisor for hand-drawn animation in Moana(2016).

YAMAGA Hiroyuki, the director of Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise and SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki, the character designer of Neon Genesis Evangelion discuss their unique worldviews and their new project.

Anniversary Commemorative Talk + NASA Special Clip Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise was created by youths in their 20s. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, there will be a rare opportunity to find out some behind-the-scenes stories of the production and watch a special clip from the production staff’s trip to NASA.
Part 2: SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki’s Introduction to Design – How to Create Characters
We will introduce the unique process by well-known character designer SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki, whose credits include Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. SADAMOTO will introduce his own unique process of creating each character.
YAMAGA Hiroyuki
YAMAGA Hiroyuki is CEO of the animation studio GAINAX. With his fellow Osaka University of Arts alumnus, he created the opening animation for the 20th Nihon SF Taikai. Then he joined the production team of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross and made his professional debut. In 1984, he produced the theatrical animation Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, which gave him the opportunity to found the animation studio GAINAX. He works in various fields as a screenwriter, director, translator, and opera producer. He is the director of the upcoming 2020 animation Queen Emeraldas based on MATSUMOTO Leiji’s book.
SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki
SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki is an animator, character designer, and manga artist. He is best known for his work as the character designer and manga artist of Neon Genesis Evangelion. When he was at college, he made his debut as a manga artist when his series of comics were published in the campus weekly magazine. At the young age of 23, he was appointed as the character designer and animation director for Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise. Later, he participated as a character designer for many famous works including Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children. He also participates as a character designer for Queen Emeraldas.
ASAO Yoshinori
ASAO Yoshinori is CEO and producer of Fukushima GAINAX. He produced a number of films including EA’s Rock(2012), Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3(2013), and Magical Wars(2014). Moreover, he designed various exhibitions including Eva & Jan Svankmajer Exhibit(2011), GAINAX Animation Techniques Exhibit(2012), and Fukushima GAINAX Opening Exhibit(2015). Currently, he is a producing a feature-length animation titled Uru in Blue, scheduled to premiere in 2018.
