Synopsis
This paper cutout animation reflects Michel Gondry’s playful perspective while deeply expressing his love and sorrow for the world. Maya, who learned to communicate through comics with her father from a young age, is intimately connected to the world she creates by hand. Paper, easily crumpled and folded at will, perfectly expresses the world she faces. Unexpected earthquakes, Maya shrinking to the size of a palm, or rivers stained with ketchup being purified by French fries—these unpredictable, whimsical imaginations keep the film dynamic and captivating. Above all, the detailed and delicate variations of paper fully realize the material’s purpose. The fluidity between live-action sequences and imagination is also striking. (LEE Jayeon)
