The Japan Animation Special Showcase ‘Doki Doki Anime’ at the 27th Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF2025) has been approved as a privately organized event commemorating the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
 
Since the early 2000s, BIAF has introduced Studio Ghibli's representative works, such as <My Neighbor Totoro>, <The Cat Returns>, and <Castle in the Sky>, to Korea for the first time. In 2015, <Miss Hokusai>, in 2017, <In This Corner of the World>, and in 2020, <Children of the Sea>three Japanese workswon the BIAF Grand Prize for Feature Film. In addition, BIAF has premiered Japanese hit titles such as Makoto Shinkai’s <Your Name.>, which won both the Excellence Award and Audience Award at BIAF2016, as well as <Haikyu!! The Winner and the Loser>, <Berserk: The Golden Age Arc>, and <Weathering With You>.
 
Notable guests who have visited BIAF include Sunao Katabuchi, director of <In This Corner of the World>; Shoji Kawamori, director of <Macross>; Ayumu Watanabe, director of <Children of the Sea>; Tatsuya Ishihara, director of <Sound! Euphonium>; Kiyotaka Oshiyama, director of <Look Back>; Masao Maruyama, producer of <Perfect Blue> and <Millennium Actress>; Yuichiro Saito, producer of <Wolf Children> and <Mirai>; George Wada, producer of <Attack on Titan> and <SPY×FAMILY>; Manabu Otsuka, producer of <Chainsaw Man> and <Jujutsu Kaisen>; and popular voice actors Yui Horie and Aina Aiba.
 
Based on its long-standing exchange with Japan, the BIAF Japan Special Showcase ‘Doki Doki Anime’ will highlight the trust and cultural exchange built between the two countries over the past 60 years through the genre of animation, which blends both popularity and artistry. The program will feature not only the latest hit titles and must-see classic animations, but also midnight special screenings, special talks with renowned Japanese voice actors, and work-in-progress presentations of anticipated new releases.
 
As an Academy Award qualifying festival, BIAF has introduced Korean animation to the world and brought international animation to Korea, fostering ongoing exchange with countries around the globe through outstanding animated works.
